The ICDP Lake Bosumtwi Drilling Project: A First Report

Summary The 10.5 -km-diameter, 1.07-Ma Bosumtwi impactcrater was the subject of a multi-disciplinary and internationaldrilling effort of the International ContinentalScientific Drilling Program (ICDP) from here July to October2004.Sixteen different holes were drilled at six locationswithin the lake, to a maximum depth crystal beaded candle holder of 540 m.A total ofabout 2.

2 km of core material was obtained.Despite sometechnical and logistical challenges, the project has beenvery successful and it is anticipated that the first scientificresults will be available in late 2005.
